,The Brutalist was actually a brutal movie to watch. Even though it’s three and a half hours long, the film was surprisingly easy to sit through—especially the first half, which easily flew by. I was so invested in the story and Adrien Brody’s character development that I didn’t even check the runtime once. After the intermission, the second half remained engaging but felt slower and more unfocused. While the first half focuses on Lazlo’s growth both as a person ans as an architect and the hardships he faces, the second half shifts more toward his wife, who came from Europe. I found the construction storyline with Guy Pearce, who was a great portayal of a wealthy businessman, far more interesting than the one involving Lazlo’s wife. I still feel like something was off at the end with Pearce’s building—like I wanted to see more without those time jumps. Not that they were unnecessary, but after a while, the whole construction storyline felt pushed aside, as if it didn’t matter that much to the plot. I think the movie lost its momentum. My biggest issue came nearly an hour before the movie ended, when a strange incident occurred that felt completely underdeveloped. The film lost me there, raising a lot of questions about certain character arcs and how this event was supposed to move the story forward. Even though it paid off in the end, I was surprised by how the movie lost its focus and what it was trying to achieve with that particular moment. The Brutalist is fairly nominated for 10 Oscars. Adrien Brody was fantastic in his role delivering an Oscar-worthy performance for sure. You could really feel his character development and how he was changing while chasing "The American Dream" It was great to see him in a role similar to the one in The Pianist. As for Best Picture, I can see it winning, but the competition is tough (not for me). Overall, for a three-and-a-half-hour movie, the pacing was really solid, and if the second half had been more focused, my rating would have been even higher. Still, I definitely recommend watching it and trying to get as invested in the story as possible. My rating: 8/10 What are your thoughts on it? Have you watched it yet? @joealwyn
